Frequently Asked Questions
I want to learn more, what’s next?
To learn more about my services and how we can work together, I recommend scheduling an introductory meeting with me. This meeting can be conducted via a phone call or video conference and typically lasts 15-30 minutes. During this meeting, I will get to know you and your objectives better, review my services, explain the process, and discuss the next steps. If you are not ready to schedule an introductory meeting at this time, I suggest subscribing to my monthly newsletter. This will give you an opportunity to get to know me better as well as receive market updates and valuable financial planning tips.
What will our first meeting cost?
I offer a complimentary first meeting, which means that there is no fee associated with our initial consultation. You will not be charged anything until we are sure I am the correct fit for your needs.
Where is my money held?
When you use my investment management services, your investments will be held at Altruist. You can find more information about Altruist in this brochure (read brochure) If you choose to implement my investment recommendations on your own, you have the flexibility to use the custodian of your choice. However, if you need a recommendation for a custodian, I am happy to offer one.
What does fee-only financial planning mean?
Fee-only financial planning is a type of financial planning where the advisor charges a fee for their services, and the fee is the sole source of compensation that they receive from their clients. This means that I do not receive commissions, referral fees, or any other form of compensation from third-party providers. As a result, as a fee-only financial planner, I do not have any conflicts of interest that could arise from commissions or other forms of compensation. This allows me to provide objective and unbiased advice that is in the best interest of my clients.
Are you a fiduciary? Why is being a fiduciary important?
It’s important to have a Financial Advisor who is a fiduciary because they have a legal and ethical duty to act in your best interest when giving you financial advice or managing your assets. This means, as a fiduciary, I must prioritize your interests over my own and provide advice and recommendations that are suitable for your financial goals and circumstances.
On the other hand, non-fiduciary Financial Advisors are only required to give you recommendations that are “suitable” for you, which may not necessarily be in your best interest. Non-fiduciary advisors may have conflicts of interest, such as receiving commissions or incentives for selling specific financial products.
By working with a fiduciary Financial Advisor, you can be more confident that the advice you receive is unbiased and in your best interest. This can help you make more informed financial decisions and achieve your long-term financial goals with greater peace of mind.
How often will we meet?
For Comprehensive Financial Planning, there are a total of six meetings. The first five meetings will take place within two to six months, depending on your preferred pace.
Investment advisory clients typically have one to three formal meetings per year, with frequent communication between meetings and additional meetings as needed.
For Project-based and Hourly Consultation Meetings, we can arrange meetings based on your preferred schedule, ranging from once a month to once every two years.
What is a CFP® ?
CFP® stands for Certified Financial Planner. It is a professional designation awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP® Board) in the United States.
As a CFP® , I must meet the CFP® Board’s education, examination, experience, and ethics requirements. This includes completing a rigorous education program in financial planning, passing a comprehensive exam, obtaining relevant work experience, and adhering to a strict code of ethics and professional responsibility.
CFP® s are trained professionals who specialize in providing financial planning services to individuals, families, and businesses. I am knowledgeable in a wide range of financial topics, including investments, retirement planning, taxes, insurance, and estate planning. Working with a CFP® can help you develop a comprehensive financial plan and make informed decisions about your money based on your goals and circumstances.
How are you compensated?
As a fee-only financial planner, I am compensated directly by my clients and do not receive any commissions or compensation from third-party sources, such as mutual fund companies or insurance providers.
Fee-only planners typically charge their clients based on a percentage of the assets they manage, an hourly rate for specific financial planning services, a flat fee for a comprehensive financial plan, or a retainer fee for ongoing advice and support.
This compensation model is designed to eliminate potential conflicts of interest that may arise when financial planners receive commissions or other forms of compensation for recommending specific financial products or services. By working with a fee-only financial planner, you can be more confident that the advice you receive is unbiased and in your best interest.
What is your investment strategy?
A passive investment strategy that is driven by asset allocation decisions and tax planning is commonly known as “tax-efficient asset allocation.” This investment approach seeks to maximize after-tax returns while minimizing tax liabilities through strategic asset allocation and efficient tax planning.
The strategy involves investing in a diversified portfolio of low-cost, tax-efficient index funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track a benchmark index, such as the S&P 500. The asset allocation is determined based on the investor’s risk tolerance, financial goals, and investment horizon, and the portfolio is rebalanced periodically to maintain the desired allocation.
Tax planning is also an essential component of this strategy. It involves minimizing taxes on investment returns by holding tax-efficient investments in taxable accounts and tax-inefficient investments in tax-deferred accounts, such as Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) or 401(k)s. It also involves tax-loss harvesting, which is the process of selling underperforming investments to offset gains and reduce tax liabilities.
Overall, the tax-efficient asset allocation strategy aims to generate long-term wealth accumulation while minimizing taxes, transaction costs, and other fees that can erode investment returns over time.
Do I have access to my accounts?
Clients who have accounts on the Altruist custodian platform have easy accessibility to their accounts through the Altruist mobile app or web portal. The Altruist platform offers a user-friendly interface that enables clients to view their account balances, holdings, transaction history, and performance reports in real-time.
The Altruist platform is designed to prioritize the security of clients’ information. It uses multi-factor authentication, encryption, and other security features to safeguard clients’ data and prevent unauthorized access. Overall, the Altruist platform offers clients convenient and secure access to their accounts, empowering them to monitor their investments efficiently and make informed decisions about their financial future.
